The point of business is to serve your customers, whether you are building homes, writing novels or selling clothing.
Don’t forget that.
If you decide to offer a new product or service, ask yourself: Does this serve my ideal customer? Will he or she buy it?
If not, don’t do it, no matter how attractive it is.
I get in my head sometimes and find myself working on a project that I find interesting, with an emphasis is on the I. Then I sit back and ask: Will my ideal customer find this useful?
If the answer is yes I continue. If not I stop, there and then, no matter how much time or energy has been invested.
A photo of my ideal customer is posted near my desk. She is the person for whom I am working. Her character is in mind as I write my Manual, prepare a seminar or write a blog post. Will she understand what I am saying? Will she find the information useful?
Develop a persona for your ideal customer and give him or her an identity. Keep this person in mind when undertaking new projects. It won’t guarantee the project’s success, but will certainly help.
